Arklow yacht race returns for second year
Updated: Tuesday, 01 Jun 2010 11:44
This Sunday sees the return of the metmAsts Turbines Yacht Race for its second year at Arklow Sailing club.
The event, where yachtsmen circumnavigate the Arklow Bank Offshore Windfarm, is open to entries from clubs inside and outside Ireland.
The course is a 34 nautical mile race and takes about six hours to complete – unpredictable weather and difficult tidal currents are expected.
The prize fund has been increased this year and Astins Yacht Trophies will also be presented, while there will also be shore-side events including music and food.
Arklow Sailing Club Commodore Eoin Quinn said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be hosting this race, and to have the continuing support of Michael Martyn and Metmasts.
'Our goal, following on from last year’s inaugural event, is to increase the number of competitors, and already we have received enquiries from various clubs along the east coast.’
