Emerging Ireland claimed the Nations Cup in Romania after beating the host nation 31-10.

First-half tries from captain Dominic Ryan and Ulster's Craig Gilroy helped the Irish to a 17-3 lead at the break.

Player of the Tournament Robin Copeland extended the lead shortly after the break with a try converted by Ian Keatley, who finished with 11 points off the boot.

Romania forced a penalty try late on but Ireland were also awarded a penalty try when Andrew Conway was illegally charged into touch.

Speaking after the game, Copeland said: “It’s a bit surreal being named the Player of the Tournament, as there’s been a few guys who’ve played very well.

"Both our wingers played very well, so I’m feeling pretty lucky. I think we really had to dig deep in all three games; it’s great that we won three out of three.”

Ireland had previously beaten Russia and Uruguay.
