Argentina coach Daniel Hourcade has named a youthful, primarily home-based squad for his team’s forthcoming summer tests against Ireland.

Many of Argentina’s Europe-based players are not selected, as the coach instead picks players located in the country.

In total, just five overseas-based players are included: the France-based trio of tight-head Ramiro Herrera (Castres), out-half Nicolas Sanchez (Bordeaux) and full-back/wing Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino (Oyonnax) are selected.

From the Super Rugby competition, tight-head Matias Diaz  of the Highlanders and Western Stormers lock Manuel Carizza are also picked.

Hourcade appears to be prioritising the Rugby Championship, which starts later in the summer.

Twenty-five players will be selected from an extended squad of 31 for each of Argentina’s two tests against Ireland on 7 and 14 June, and against Scotland on 20 June.

“Ireland is the best team in Europe and one of the best in the world, so it will be very hard,” Hourcade said.

“Scotland, meanwhile, are not performing well but have players that play in the best clubs in Europe.

“We have been demanding for years [to play] at the highest level and we have to enjoy, learn, and try to be protagonists. I am excited and eager to play these games.”
