Siobhan McCrohan won a bronze medal for Ireland at the World Cup rowing regatta at Lucerne, Switzerland today.

The Galway woman stuck to her guns well in the A Final of the lightweight single sculls. The race was won well by Alexandra Tsiavou of Greece, but in a tight battle for the other medal places Switzerland's Pamela Weisshaupt and McCrohan edged out both Poland and Belgium to take silver and bronze.

Last season McCrohan, who turned 24 last week, teamed up with Claire Lambe to form a promising lightweight double, and this crew could qualify a boat for the Olympic Games at the World Championships next month.

Ireland just missed out on a second medal when the lightweight quadruple scull of Shane O'Driscoll, Niall Kenny, Peter Hanily and Justin Ryan were passed in the closing stages of their A Final by Denmark. The race was won by Germany, with Italy second.

The Ireland crew will compete at the World Under-23 Championships in Amsterdam in two weeks' time.
