Disappointment for Ireland in Poland
Tuesday, 25 August 2009 16:39Ireland's top adaptive rowing crew, the legs, trunk and arms coxed four, have missed out on qualification for the semi-finals in the World Championships in Poznan, Poland by one place.
In a repechage which was won comfortably by Canada, Ireland disputed the second of the two qualification places but could not head Australia and were three seconds behind them at the finish.
The crew of Emer Patten, Shane Ryan, Kevin du Toit, Sarah Caffrey and cox Amy Judge competing in LTA4+ CLASS set a brisk pace of the start.
At the mid-point they were pushing both Canada and Australia for the final qualifying spot, but were unable to make up the distance at the finish.
They will now contest the B finals on Friday.
The trunks and arms double scull of Vincent Culhane and Karen Cromie are also set for Friday's B finals, finishing fourth in their repechage.
Meanwhile Sean Casey finished third in the men's single scull repechage missing out on a chance to compete in the A or B finals.
The race was won by Czech Republic's Ondrej Synek with Ariel Suarez of Argentina second with Casey a clear third well. Only the top two advanced.
