Hayes through to World University rowing final

Orla Hayes produced a fine performance to win the Lightweight Women's Single Scull repechage this morning to ensure her place in Sunday's final at the World University Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Having just narrowly missed out on qualification in the heat, Hayes was eager to put in a good performance to ensure that she would be racing for the medals tomorrow.

Ireland's only other athlete at the championships, Liam Molloy (NUI Galway), wasn't so fortunate and although finishing third in his repechage also this morning he will now face a 'B' final this afternoon.

Ireland's team manager, Ciara Ni Cheilleachair, is confident about the chances of adding to Ireland's recent success at this level.

'Orla has been in fantastic form all summer and really produced a fantastic result this morning. She now looks forward to tomorrow's final being one of the favourites to secure a medal. She is very experienced and is here to get the job done.'

'It's disappointing for Liam, but realistically he can win the 'B' final and show that he is capable of performing at this level.'
