Wise Dan will go in pursuit of a third consecutive Breeders' Cup Mile crown after he made a successful return to action at Saratoga.

The two-times American Horse of the Year had been sidelined since May, during which time he underwent colic surgery, and pounced by a nose on his comeback in the Grade Two Bernard Baruch Handicap.

He will now have one more outing, in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland, before attempting to emulate the great Golidikova by claiming a hat-trick in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita on 1 November.

Trainer Charles LoPresti said: "We wanted a good race for him to get started with.

"He's been through a lot. I knew he was training good and I knew he was going to run good.

"I wouldn't have been disappointed if he was beat - it would have been something to build on.

"He showed why he is the two-times Horse of the Year.

"God willing, he comes back good. He'll be way tougher next time."
