Brian Ellison will consider stepping Top Notch Tonto up in distance after he failed to fire in unsuitable conditions in Saturday's Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

The four-year-old enjoyed a tremendous campaign in 2013, winning three times before signing off with a fantastic effort to fill the runner-up spot behind Olympic Glory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day.

However, he was well beaten on his return to action in Sandown's bet365 Mile and was well behind Olympic Glory when sixth in this weekend's Group One feature.

Ellison is praying for a break in the drying weather.
He said: "We probably shouldn't have run him. He's fine this morning, but we won't run him on that ground again.

"He jumped (from the stalls) so well and raced a bit free having almost found himself in front.

"I've always been quite keen to step him up to a mile and a quarter at some stage, so we'll play it by ear regarding where we go next with him.

"There are races at York and Newmarket and there's Royal Ascot to consider, but it all depends on the ground.

"When he ran at Ascot last year, the rain came at the right time and everything went right.

"We'll pray for the same to happen again."
