Steely Thomas looking forward

Sam Thomas is determined to concentrate on the future after coming through a troubled spell while deputising for the injured Ruby Walsh as number one rider for champion trainer Paul Nicholls.
During the past few weeks Thomas suffered several falls, notably on Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase and Big Buck's in the Hennessy Gold Cup.
He was also overlooked for the ride on Master Minded in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown with Tony McCoy guiding the Queen Mother Champion Chase hero to an impressive victory.
He did have a welcome triumph at the top level on Noland for the Ditcheat trainer in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown on Tuesday.
But on the day Walsh returned to action after rupturing his spleen four weeks ago, Thomas insisted on drawing a line under a turbulent time.
‘It's onwards and upwards now. I don't really like talking about it all - it's in the past and I am looking towards the future,’ said Thomas.
‘Maybe I'm a bit thicker skinned now, but I just want to get on with it. I think most (of the criticism) went in one ear and out the other - you can't let it get to you.’
Walsh rallied round his colleague at the Nicholls yard and had every sympathy for him.
‘It was great for him (Noland's win) - he's just not had any luck and you have to have luck in racing,’ he said.
‘Sam's a very good rider and has done little wrong in my eyes.’
