Mad Brian will aim to get his season back on track in Sunday's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Novice Chase at Navan.

Trainer Gillian Callaghan took the bold step of running him in Grade One company in the Topaz Novice Chase over Christmas and while the eight-year-old was not disgraced, he could only finish sixth.

Previously Mad Brian had gone down only narrowly in the Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan, when a half-length second to Cootamundra.

Callaghan said: "He came out of his last run very well and seems fresh.

"He's done some good work at home and seems ready to go again.

"I thought he jumped and travelled well (in the Topaz) but ultimately the front few just quickened away from him and had that extra bit of class.

"We'll just take it one step at a time with him now and hope he can get a win on the board this weekend, then we'll make another plan."
