Maxios got up close home to deny Planteur in the Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp.
Planteur, third in the Dubai World Cup on his previous start, looked like landing the Group One spoils for trainer Marco Botti when he stormed past Don Bosco under Christophe Soumillon.
However, Stephane Pasquier had other ideas and brought the Jonathan Pease-trained Maxios with a telling run to get up in the dying strides.
Mandour was third but Henry Cecil's raider Beauty Parlour disappointed on her return to action. The former French-based filly could never get in a blow and was sixth of the seven runners.
