Dylan Thomas nets Arc for O'Brien
Sunday, 7 October 2007 17:16Dylan Thomas and Kieren Fallon survived a lengthy stewards' inquiry to give Aidan O'Brien his first victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
The dual Irish Champion Stakes winner hit the front inside the final furlong under Fallon but drifted across to the rail, interfering with at least three other runners.
Just as it looked as if the race was in safe-keeping, Mick Channon's Youmzain threw down a tremendous challenge.
But Fallon managed to get one more effort from the son of Danehill to gain a deserved success. Sagara finished third, with hot favourite Authorized well beaten.
However, the stewards deliberated the outcome for over 30 minutes before confirming the placings.
Despite the euphoria of winning the Arc, Fallon could not manage a Group One double as Yeats was surprisingly turned over at odds-on in the Prix du Cadran, which went the way of German challenger Le Miracle.
The dual Ascot Gold Cup winner appeared in trouble with three furlongs to run and despite Fallon's urgings from the saddle, Yeats could never got on terms with Werner Baltromei's stayer, who had finished third at the Royal meeting in June.
Dominic Boeuf took up the running at halfway from Michael Bell's Juniper Girl and held off the late challenge of Varevees, with Yeats back in third.
Earlier, Benbaun landed the first Group One of his career with an impressive success in the Prix de l'Abbaye.
Mark Wallace's stable star has been in consistent form all year apart from one blip at Royal Ascot and was always handy under Pat Smullen.
Nunthorpe winner Kingsgate Native emerged from the pack to chase him home but could never quite get on terms.
Last year's winner Desert Lord stuck on gamely for third.
Zarkava produced a fantastic turn of foot to win the Prix Marcel Boussac for Alain de Royer-Dupre and Christophe Soumillon.
The once-raced filly was settled in the rear through the early stages and Soumillon went for a daring run up the inside before producing the Aga Khan-owned juvenile round the outside of the whole field.
She cut down long-time leader Conference Call inside the final furlong, with Dermot Weld's Mad About You claiming third.
Rio De La Plata, trained by Saeed Bin Suroor and ridden by Frankie Dettori, won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
Godolphin's leading juvenile had chased home Jim Bolger's New Approach on his last start but confirmed he will give that rival something to think about in next year's Classics with this performance.
Dettori always looked in the box position settled in behind Greatwallofchina and came back on the bridle a furlong out.
The response was immediate and he powered away from his rivals, with Declaration Of War running a huge race in second. Shediak finished third.
The winner was given a 6-1 quote by the sponsors for next year's Stan James 2000 Guineas.
