John McCarthy took up Paralympic athletics in 1995 and has since represented Ireland at two Paralympic Games, winning discus silver at Athens 2004 and finishing ninth in the club.

Beijing wasn’t as successful as he placed ninth and 11th in the discus and club respectively.

McCarthy has also achieved success at World Championship level having won bronze in the club in Assen in 2006.

He hopes to achieve success in London as he is fourth in the 2012 world rankings for club.

McCarthy now also competes in the wheelchair sprint events and is ranked at seventh in the world.
