Irish swimmer Darragh McDonald has finished eighth in the 50m freestyle S6 Paralympic final.

McDonald clocked a time of 33.26 in the final, which was won by China's Xu Qing in a world record time of 28.57.

Lorenzo Perez Escalona of Cuba won silver, and Zheng Tao of China won bronze.

McDonald qualified for the final by finishing third his heat with a time of 33.15.

After the event McDonald, who has already won gold in the 400m freestyle S6, said the 50m final would help him focus on the 100m competition at the weekend.

“Today was just a warm up for Saturday,” he said.
