Sport: Bronze success for Irish fencer
Tuesday, 5 November 200218-year old Irish fencer Siobhan Byrne achieved her first major international medal when she won a bronze at the Junior European Championships today, in Conegliano, Italy. This result will be a major boost to her confidence going forward into the senior season where her aim is to move up in the senior rankings from her current 30th place in order to ensure qualification for the Athens Olympics.
Having won 4 of her 5 bouts in the first round, Siobhan had a bye into the last 16 where she beat Georgina Kertecsenyi of Hungary before meeting the German Stefanie Kubissa whom she beat convincingly 15/9 to get into the semi final. Siobhan was beaten in the semi-final by Leonore Perrus of France with a score of 15/9.
Tomorrow, Andrew Fenwick from Derry will fence in the Men's Epee event.
