Olympics: Hickey in line for Europe's top job
Tuesday, 17 July 2001Ireland's Pat Hickey is in line to become one of Europe's most important sports administrators following the appointment of Dr Jacques Rogge as president of the International Olympic Committee yesterday. The current president of the Olympic Council of Ireland is poised to replace the Belgian as president of the European Olympic Committee, having served as vice-president since 1996.
Hickey will fill the vacancy automatically until a vote is taken on the matter in the near future. However, having lobbied strongly in support of Rogge, he may well win the post on a permanent basis, making him one of the most important sports administrators in Europe.
