Scott Evans has been knocked out at the last 16 stage of the World Championships in Denmark.

Evans lost to world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in straight games, 21-11 21-12.

The Irish number one, who recently won his first ever Grand Prix title at the Brazil Open in Rio, was beaten in 36 minutes of play.

Chong Wei has featured in the final of the last World Championships and Olympic Games and looked impressive from start to finish.

Evans had to work hard when in attack with the Malaysian retrieving everything the Irish man threw at him.

Evans continued to work hard but as the game went on, Chong Wei showed his class as he won the match in straight games to book a place in the quarters against number six seed  Zhengming Wang of China.

Irish players have a number events coming up including the European Mixed team qualifications that will be held in Dublin at Baldoyle Badminton Centre between 7-9 November.

The event will see Scott Evans, Sam and Chloe Magee back in action as they take on Bulgaria, Slovakia and Norway for a place in the top eight championship finals later in the year.
