Mixed fortunes for Irish badminton players in Russia

The brother and sister partnership of Chloe and Sam Magee got off to winning ways at the European Championships in Kazan on Wednesday.

The Irish number one mixed double outfit defeated Jakub Bitman and Alzbeta Basova from Czech Republic 21-9 21-18.

The Magees face a daunting task against Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark in the next round.

Scott Evans was another winner for the Irish contingent as he coasted past Ilija Pavlovic of Serbia on a 21-6 21-9 scoreline.

Evans faces number four seed Victor Axelsen of Denmark in the second round.

The Dutch duo of Jacco Arends and Jelle Maas defeated Sam Magee and Jonathan Dolan 13-21 21-17 21-19 in the men’s doubles.

Sinead Chambers and Caroline Black proved no match for England’s Lauren Smith and Gabrielle Adcock in the women’s doubles as Smith and Adcock recorded a 21-12 21-7 success.

Chloe Magee and Evans are back in action on Thursday in the singles events.
