Ireland’s Scott Evans has been beaten in the opening round at the World Championships in China.

The Irish number one was beaten 21-14 21-15 by world number one and top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.

Evans performed with huge credit, keeping his opponent on court for 40 minutes in Guangzhou before Lee emerged victorious.

China's world champion Lin Dan opened his campaign with a resounding 21-6 21-9 win against American Sattawat Pongnairat.

In the mixed doubles, Chloe and Sam Magee were defeated by the Dutch pair of Jorrit De Ruiter and Samantha Barning 21-15 21-12, despite having held an 11-9 advantage in the first set.

Chloe Magee now faces Hsiao Ma Pai of Chinese Taipei in the opening round of the singles event on the second day of play.
