Journalist Johnny Murphy passes away

Well known Waterford news and sports journalist Johnny Murphy, who worked for the Irish Examiner newspaper, has died.

The 72-year-old Tipperary native started his journalistic career with the Dungarvan Observer in Co. Waterford in the late 1950's.

He then became news correspondent for the Irish Examiner and worked there for over 30 years.

Mr Murphy, who was also former chairman of the Waterford county board and a former town councillor, died this morning following a short illness.
