Ireland's Chloe Magee bowed out of the London 2012 women's singles Badminton competition despite a superb performance against former world number two Pi Hongya of France.

Magee claimed an early lead in what was effectively a shoot-out for a place in the last 16 at Wembley Arena but Pi recovered to win 16-21 21-18 21-14.

Magee, the world number 44 from Raphoe in County Donegal, recovered from a four-point deficit early on to take the first game.

Pi, with both knees and an ankle strapped, showed her fortitude to take the match to a decider but had to dig even deeper to secure the match.

Magee edged into a 9-7 lead early in the third and continued to defend well as Pi tried to take the attack to her.

But Pi levelled and began to edge away after the mid-game interval, eventually completing victory in 60 minutes.

Pi, the 16th seed and quarter-finalist four years ago, now moves through to the knockout stage as the winner of Group I.
