Deirdre Ryan is out of the women’s high jump after failing to clear 1.90 metres as a disappointing Olympics for Ireland’s track and field athletes continued.

Ryan successfully tackled 1.80m and 1.85m, but missed three attempts for the next jump.

The Dundrum athlete said she was “very disappointed” by her performance.

"I at least wanted to jump a season's best - 1.90m," said Ryan, who finished sixth at last year's World Championships, having jumped an Irish record of 1.95m to qualify for the final.

"I have had a back injury, but I've had treatment twice a day and I didn't feel it out there.

"My back just went into spasm and seized up and for a week I couldn't really jog, but that was two weeks ago.

"The atmosphere was incredible," she said. "The crowd were really behind me, cheering me every time."
