Paul Hession, Deirdre Ryan and Derval O'Rourke all showed good pre-Olympics form in European meets on Tuesday night.

In Lucerne, Switzerland, Hession was second in the 200m in a time of 20.54 seconds and Deirdre Ryan (Dundrum South Dublin AC) cleared 1.86m in the high jump.

In Lignano, Italy, Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) ran a season’s best of 13.02 for second in the 100m hurdles behind Lolo Jones of America who won in 12.85.

Roseanne Galligan (Newbridge AC) clocked 2:02.72 over 800m.

Also in Lucerne, Conor McCullough (Crusaders AC) smashed the Irish under-23 hammer record with a throw of 75.09m.

The throw is a new personal best and betters the 71.10m record of Gary Halpin from 1988.

A transfer of allegiance form was completed by McCullough in recent weeks allowing him compete for Ireland instead of the US.

Ciaran O'Lionaird made his comeback from injury in the 61st Cork City Sports, running the mile. O'Lionaird came home fourth, but did manage to run under four minutes. Ryan Gregson won the race in 3:57.98. O'Lionaird clocked 3:58.84. The meet was O'Lionaird's first since picking up an Achilles tendon injury in March.

Robert Heffernan was also in action in Cork. The athlete clocked 11:14.29 in the 20km walk. The time is only 0.2 seconds off his personal best.

Joanne Cuddidy could only manage third in the 400m, clocking 51.86.

After the event the Irish number one said she had experimented by giving extra gas in the opening, but that this caught up with her in the last 50m. She also put the disappointing performance down to flying in from Spain just the day before.
