Grainne Murphy (20) hails from Ballinaboola, New Ross, Co Wexford.

She was a triple gold medallist at the 2009 European Junior Swimming Championships and was awarded the Texaco Young Sportstar Award 2009.

She won a silver medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 2010 European Aquatics Championships and is the current holder of the Irish record for that event.

She was shortlisted for RTÉ Sports Person of the Year in 2010, and won the Irish Times Sports Woman of the Year award in the same year.

On 3 December 2011, she qualified for the 2012 Olympics in London.

She is based at the high performance unit at the University of Limerick.

First in Olympic action on 2 August in the heats. Start time is 10am.

SIGNIFICANT RESULTS:

2010: European Aquatics Championships, Budapest, Hungary. 1500m freestyle – silver.

2009: European Junior Swimming Championships, Prague, Czech Republic. Triple gold medallist.
