John Joe Nevin (23) hails from Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Nevin qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics by winning the first European Qualifying Tournament. Nevin subsequently won the 2008 European Union Boxing Championships.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics he beat Abdelhalim Ourradi 9-4 in his first round before being beaten by Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan 9-2 in the round of 16.

On 9 September 2009, Nevin guaranteed Ireland a historic sixth medal at the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships after he beat China's Yu Gu in Milan.

He won his quarter-final 7-5. In the semi-final he lost by 5-4 to Russian Eduard Abzalimov, and so took away a bronze medal.

In Baku, Azerbaijan, he qualified for the 2012 London Olympic games by reaching the quarter-finals of the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, subsequently he reached the semi-finals by beating Orzubek Shaymov of Uzbekistan 19-17 to claim another World Championship bronze medal, as a result he has the distinction of being the first Irish boxer in history to claim two World Championship medals.

In 2012 he beat his cousin Michael Nevin in the final of the Senior National All Irelands 23–3 to win his fifth national senior title in a row.

He boxes out of Cavan boxing club under coach Brian McKeown.

He signed with the Paris United Team in October 2010 in The World Series of Boxing (WSB) and helped them win the Championship.

First in Olympic action on 28 July in the round of 32. Fight at 1.30pm or 8.30pm.
