Michael Conlan (20) lost the Ulster flyweight final in 2011, but he won the Irish National Championships title in 2011. He became the first boxer from St John Bosco in over 40 years to record such a feat.

He is now emulating St John Bosco pugilist Marty Quinn in qualifying for the Olympics. Quinn boxed at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

Conlan qualified for the London Games by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Conlan staged a magnificent comeback to beat French 2008 Olympian and 2007 AIBA World bronze medalist Nordine Ouabaali.

The Belfast flyweight was trailing 6-4 at the end of the first, but leveled the bout at 11-11 going into the third before racking up a 20-17 verdict, his third win in Baku against quality opposition.

However, he lost his quarter-final to Andrew Selby of Wales.

First in Olympic action on 30 July in the round of 32. Action starts at 1.30pm or 8.30pm.
