Ava Hutchinson (29) Qualified for the London Olympics on 15 January at the Houston Marathon. The Dundrum South Dublin athlete ran 2 hours 35 minutes 33 seconds in the American city, well inside the Olympic A standard time of 2:37.

Hutchinson had earlier failed to qualify for the Olympics through the Dublin Marathon in October 2011.

She faded in the final stages to finish in 2:42:48. The Dublin Marathon was Hutchinson’s debut marathon.

Hutchinson went the US scholarship route by attending Providence College. Since 2011 she has been based at Loughborough University.

In February 2011, she won the Irish cross-country title. She followed that with the national half-marathon title in September 2011. That victory came in her debut half-marathon, with a time of 74:30.

Hutchinson also ran the world cross-country in 2011. She is still mentored by her former college coach in Providence – Ray Treacy.
