Ciaran O’Lionaird (24) hails from Co Cork. He suffered a career-threatening back injury in 2010, but recovered well in 2011, running a career best of 3m34.46s – putting him fourth on the Irish all-time list.

That time qualified him for the World Championships and Olympics. This was the first time an Irishman had reached the final of a major global outdoor 1500m event since Niall Bruton in 1995.

Nicknamed The Bullet with the Mullet.

He hails from Macroom, Co Cork, and has spent most of his athletics life in the USA on scholarships in Michigan and Florida Universities.

He is now ranked fourth in the all-time Irish 1500m list, only bettered by Olympians Ray Flynn, Marcus O’Sullivan and Frank O’Mara.

First in Olympic action on 3 August in the heats. Start time is 7pm.
