Team Ireland's Robert Hendrick has taken silver in the C1 men’s canoe at the Nanjing Youth Olympics.
After winning his semi-final comfortably, Hendrick was up against the much-fancied French paddler Lucas Roisin. In a very close race, gold and silver were decided by 0.8 seconds.
Hendrick is a member of Canoeing Ireland’s slalom team, who are coached by three-time Olympian Eoin Rheinisch
Speaking after the event, Hendrick said: “I gave it everything I had. I am delighted to have taken a silver medal. My training this year has been geared towards peaking at Nanjing, this is a dream come true."
Karl Dunne of Canoeing Ireland commented: “Canoeing Ireland are delighted for Robert.
"This Youth Olympic medal, added to the silver medal won by Liam Jegou at the Junior World Championships, has capped off a great year for our junior slalom athletes and will inspire them to more success in the coming years."
