Olympics Day 9: The Irish in Action

Shooting: Longford man Derek Burnett, who is competing in his fourth Olympic Games, stands in 25th place after the first day's action in the the Men’s Trap event.

Trap qualification is taking place at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

He scored 24, 23 and 23 in the three rounds this morning to leave him on an overall score of 70 - five off the lead..

Cycling: Martyn Irvine finishes his Olympics with a time of 1:04.558 in the 1km time-trial in the cycling Omnium. Irvine finishing the six-event race in 13th place overall.

Athletics: In the Women's Marathon, Linda Byrne finished in 66th place on a time of 2:37.13.

Ava Hutchison ended in 68th place on 2:37.17.

Catríona Jennings finished in last place (107th), with a time of 3:22.11.

Sailing: In the Star Medal Race at Weymouth, Peter O'Leary and David Burrows came in last of the 10 boat fleet.

The race was won by the Swedish Pair of Fredieric Loof and Max Salminen.

Sailing: In the 49er class, Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern finished seventh in Race 12. and 13th in Race 13.

Boxing: The quarter-finals of the Bantamweight division saw John Joe Nevin beat Mexico's Oscar Valdez Fierro to win a bronze medal and set up a semi-final clash with a Cuban opponent later in the week.
