The Olympic Council of Ireland has chosen Aoife Hoey from Portarlington to lead the Irish team at the Winter Olympic Games opening ceremony in Vancouver.

The 25-year-old, who is the pilot of the Irish women’s bobsleigh team, will carry the Irish flag in the parade of over 80 nations taking part in the Winter Olympic Games.

‘I am absolutely thrilled at being given this honour,’ Hoey said.

‘It’s been a rough few days out here in Vancouver with all the legal action swirling around the bobsleigh team, but this move has lifted our spirits in a big way.’
