Ireland's Andrew Bree finished fifth in his 200m breaststroke semi-final race to break the Irish record for the second time this week.
Bree recorded a time 2.10.16 seconds in a very fast heat that was won by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima who broke the Olympic record in the process.
Bree failed to qualify for the final by less than 0.2 of a second, with the first four in his race all qualifying.
RTÉ Sport's John Kenny reports that Bree has pulled out of tonight's 200 Individual Medley heats.
Bree had entered the 200 IM this evening as he had recorded an Olympic B standard time for the event.
However, the 27-year-old has decided not to compete this evening, ending his participation in the games.
Melanie Nocher is now Ireland's remaining competitor in the pool and swims the heats of the 200 backstroke on Thursday.
