A host of sporting events scheduled to take place this weekend have been cancelled or postponed due to frozen playing surfaces and treacherous travelling conditions.

GAA: Mixed inter-county and colleges competitions have been badly affected by the weather with tournaments scheduled for Leinster, Munster and Connacht and Ulster all postponed.

Rugby: Ulster v Ospreys at Ravenhill, Connacht v Dragons at the Sportsground and Leinster v Glasgow, all scheduled for Friday night, have fallen victim to the weather.

Munster's match against the Llanelli Scarlets at Musgrave Park on Sunday has been postponed due to the pitch being declared unplayable. Read more here.

In domestic rugby, The IRFU has cancelled all games in the AIB League scheduled for this weekend, and the women's interprovincial finals scheduled to take place in Naas this weekend.

The Leinster and Ulster Branches have also announced that all of this weekend’s scheduled club matches in both provinces are off.

Meanwhile, Ulster Rugby have enacted plans to beat the big freeze and ensure next Friday night's Heineken Cup clash with Edinburgh goes ahead. A marquee and several commercial heat blowers have been hired to thaw the frozen turf.

Racing: Saturday’s meeting at Punchestown and Sunday's card at Leopardstown, featuring the valuable MCR Hurdle, have been cancelled due to frost and snow.

Horse Racing Ireland has announced that the Leopardstown meeting will now be held on Saturday, 23 January with live coverage on RTÉ Television. RTÉ Television will also be covering the action from Leopardstown on 24 January.

The Navan meeting originally scheduled on 23 January will now transfer to Wednesday, 27 January.

The Punchestown meeting originally scheduled for Saturday, 9 January has also been re-scheduled and will now be held on Wednesday, 20 January.

Several meetings in the UK have also been abandoned.

Soccer: Seven Premier League games have so far been postponed due to the weather in the UK: Hull City v Chelsea, Burnley v Stoke, Sunderland v Bolton, Fulham v Porstsmouth, Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa, while West Ham United v Wolves and Liverpool v Tottenham on Sunday are all off.

Seven Coca Cola Championship and ten Scottish Cup games set for this weekend have been postponed so far.

Athletics: The Mallow Athletic Club 10 mile race scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled. Over 1,000 entrants from all over Ireland and the UK were set to attend. A replacement date is being investigated.

Hockey: All Irish Junior Cup matches and all local league fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled. Leinster Men's and Women's matches are also postponed.

Greyhound Racing: There will be no greyhound racing in Ireland this weekend. The remaining cards at Harold's Cross on Friday, Shelbourne Park and Cork on Saturday and Clonmel on Sunday were all called off this morning.

This evening, the Irish Greyhound Board has announced that there will be no racing until Friday 15 January at the earliest.
