There was heartbreak for Dungannon's Kris Meeke and his Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle when they crashed out early on in the third last stage of the the Rally Germany while leading the event today.

Meeke, driving a Citroen DS3, inherited the lead on stage 15 this morning when leader Jari Matti Latvala of Finland crashed his VW Polo, handing the 35-year-old Irish driver the chance to win his first ever World Rally Championship round.

However, Meeke, who was being chased hard by the Hyundai of Belgium's Thierry Neuville, who trailed Meeke by only 8.4 seconds, hit a wall on only the second corner of stage 16, ripping the rear left wheel off his Citroen, ending his interest in the event.
