The Subaru Impreza of Tim McNulty was the dominant force on the Donegal roads today as the first stages of the 40th Topaz Donegal International Rally got underway.

McNulty leads by 28 seconds after day one of the event where he and co-driver Paul Kiely won five out of the six stages.

McNulty was top seed going into the event and the first stage provided tricky conditions for the drivers with many unsure on the most beneficial tyre selection.

McNulty got his selection for the first two stage correct picking a slick tyre with some cuts and this enabled him to build up a 10 second lead on Stage 1 and increasing that on Stage 2.

However on stage 3, as McNulty protected his tyres, Alistair Fisher made a surge winning the stage and opening a 3 second lead overall on McNulty.

Fisher was driving the same Fiesta S2000 that Mikko Hirvonen drove to victory in Monte Carlo last year.

At service McNulty changed to a hard compund tyre and quickly set about reasserting his dominance.

He regained the lead on Stage 4 and went on to win Stages 5 and 6 to leave a gap of 28.6 seconds between himself and Fisher going into Day Two at the Donegal International Rally.

Derek McGarrity and Daragh O’Riordan finshed in 3rd and 4th respectively with Kevin Barrett making up the top 5 after Day One.
