Brian O’Mahony and co-driver John Higgins clinched the Dunlop National Rally Championship in their Subaru WRC car with a third place finish in the Donegal Harvest Rally.

They finished five seconds ahead of their title rivals Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry (Subaru WRC) on the eighth and final round of the series, with the Kerry duo of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Fionn Foley (Subaru WRC) a further 34 seconds adrift.

O’Mahony, who led the series by six points prior to the start of this last round, needed to finish within three places of Fitzmaurice to secure championship glory.

With Declan Boyle, who was second in the rally, taking maximum Dunlop points, O’Mahony’s points haul in Donegal, that amounted to 18 (second registered competitor), gave him a championship winning margin of ten points.

The rally was won by Garry Jennings and Neil Doherty, who finished eleven seconds ahead of the local crew of Declan Boyle and Brian Boyle.
