Muller claims first Touring Car title
Sunday, 16 November 2008 11:40Yvan Muller has secured his first World Touring Car title after securing a third-place finish in Race One in Macau today.
Alain Menu drove his Chevrolet to the chequered flag after starting on pole, but it was further back in the field that the title was decided as Muller held on to third place while his SEAT team-mate Gabriele Tarquini - the only man who could still catch him in the standings - finished down in seventh place.
Frenchman Muller then claimed second place in Race 2, with the Italian Tarquini down in 12th, to finish the season 28 points ahead of his closest rival.
Tarquini's poor showing meant that Robert Huff finished only one point out of second place in the final standings after he claimed victory in Race Two ahead of Muller.
Any fears the Chevrolet driver had of losing third place in the standings had been eased by an engine failure for Sweden's Rickard Rydell in the first race, but the SEAT driver deserves special mention for his drive from 25th place to fourth in the second race.
