Rally fever results in limited accommodation

Demand for accommodation in the north west is running high with the inaugural round of the World Rally Championship in Ireland fast approaching.

Rooms in Sligo have been booked out for many months, but in parts of Leitrim and south Donegal a number of beds are still available for the event in Ballyshannon and Donegal Town.

South Donegal will see action on Sunday morning, with a thrilling 14 km-stage from the village of Ballintra to Rosnowlagh on Sunday morning beginning at 11.39am.

The impressive transition of Sligo Institute of Technology from a fully operational third level college to a temporary service park for the WRC has also become a reality.

Manufacturers and teams participating in Rally Ireland have begun arriving, while the level of helicopter traffic in the area will reach record levels in the coming days.

A total of 62 helicopters have now been registered for Rally Ireland.

There are three sites at which a full service including air/ground communications, fire cover and ground handling will be available for the staging of Rally Ireland in the North West.

Thirty-four other sites are also being used which have landowner permission and GPS co-ordinates. These were chosen in conjunction with Rally Ireland.

The main operational control centre is at Sligo IT and will be operational daily, other serviced sites are at Lough Gill (Friday) and Enniskillen (Saturday).
