Finn Harps 0-3 Galway United
Updated: Saturday, 13 Jun 2009 22:05
Two goals from Vinny Faherty helped Galway United cruise through to the fourth round of the FAI Cup at Finn Park.
Having put his side ahead in the 15th minute with a close range header, he then doubled his tally in the 50th minute with a low shot into the corner of the net.
And first division side Finn Harps were still recovering when they were stunned again 60 seconds later as Jay O’Shea’s free took a deflection for number three.
Galway began promisingly with Derek O’Brien and Faherty both having shots on target, before Faherty’s opener as he connected with a Iarfhlaith Davoren cross.
Harps’ cause wasn’t helped by the sending-off of influential midfielder Michael Funston in the 30th minute after he lashed out at John Russell who had thwarted his run into the box.
Declan Edwards also hit the post for Galway while Harps’ best chance fell to Johnny Havlin in the first half, but he scooped the ball over from five yards.
Once Galway got their third the game was over as a contest although youthful Harps kept battling until the end.
