Ireland’s men were beaten 2-1 by the Netherlands in the opening game of their European Championships campaign in Boom.

Andrew Meredith’s side opened the scoring against the run of play in the 20th minute through Shane O'Donoghue's penalty corner.

The Netherlands, ranked third in the world rankings, struck back 11 minutes later as set-piece specialist Mink van der Weerden’s drag flick levelled matters.

The Dutch hit the front with just five minutes remaining when Rob Kempermann fired home a trademark reverse-stick shot after David Harte had initially saved Robert van der Horst’s effort.

Ireland will play Poland in their second game of the championships at 3pm on Monday.
