Ireland almost pulled off an impressive victory but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Argentina at the women’s Four Nation Tournament in Buenos Aires.
Taking on the world number two ranked side in their own back yard, the Irish shocked their hosts by taking a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes.
The Irish goals came from two penalty corners, the first a deflection by Shirley McCay and the second a straight strike by Cliodhna Sargent and the Girls in Green took the lead into half time.
But the home side fought back in the second half as Argentina pressed hard and were rewarded from a penalty corner, followed by an equaliser from open play in the 66th minute.
The Irish conceded a penalty stroke with 50 seconds on the clock but keeper Pamela Smithwick was the hero and the game finished in a draw.
Ireland will play India on Sunday in the third-place play-off.
