Ian Woosnam sprang a surprise for the afternoon foursomes at the Ryder Cup when he paired Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood.
All four Europeans who sat out the fourballs were brought into the action.
Dubliner Paul McGinley linked up with close friend Padraig Harrington, while Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia were also reunited from two years ago.
David Howell was Henrik Stenson's partner for the Swede's cup debut.
American captain Tom Lehman kept two of his players - Scott Verplank and Vaughn Taylor - on the sidelines. Chad Campbell and Zach Johnson were called upon for the top game against Harrington and McGinley.
The clash of the giants this time was Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk against Garcia and Donald, who won both their games together in 2004.
