Englishman Brian Davis put himself in a strong position to qualify for this year's Open Championship after a first-round 66 in the American leg of International Final Qualifying in Plano, Texas.
The top eight players after 36 holes will earn a spot at Muirfield this summer and Davis' four-under-par round had him in third place in the clubhouse going into the afternoon's action.
Davis was one over after 10 holes but a run of six birdies saw him soar up the leaderboard before a bogey on his penultimate hole dropped him back to four under.
The lead was held by the United States' Josh Teater, who fired a first-round 64 with fellow American Luke Guthrie one shot back on five under.
Sweden's Robert Karlsson shot a 67 to sit in a qualification place on three under alongside Colombian Andres Echavarria.
Former Masters champion Trevor Immelman was also in contention after firing a 68 along with Americans Dicky Pride, Johnson Wagner and Jimmy Walker.
Last year's US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III was in a large group on level par while Scotland's Martin Laird had a mountain to climb after a two-over-par 72.
