John Daly failed to take a berth in next week's US Open during a 36-hole qualifier for next week's major golf championship at Bethpage Black.
Daly, who returns to the PGA Tour this week after the lifting of a six-month suspension, fired a one-under par 70 in a morning round at Ridgewood Country Club with a two-over 73 in an afternoon round at Germantown Country Club.
The 43-year-old American, known for his long drives and flamboyant life away from the course, fired only four birdies on the day.
Two-time major champion Daly was among 110 players seeking 13 spots in the year's second major that begins 18 June at Bethpage Black. He will play this week at the nearby St Jude Classic in his return to PGA action.
Daly has played in events in Asia, Australia and Europe, dropped weight and hopes to reclaim at least a measure of the form that saw him capture the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open titles.
