Cavan golfer Leona Maguire has retained her spot as the women's world number one amateur in the latest rankings released today.

Slieve Russell club member Maguire has held her top spot since May 2015.

Last year, she finished second in the professional Handa Ladies European Masters tournament in July and was the leading amateur at the Evian Championship, one of Ladies golf's five majors.

21-year-old Leona and her twin sister Lisa are scholarship students at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

In 2015, Leona won four college tournaments and was named college National Player of the Year as well as Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year by American coaches.

Ireland has a second representative in the world top 10 in Royal County Down's Olivia Mehaffey.

Mehaffey (18), who won the Scottish and Welsh Amateur Opens last year, is likely to join Maguire on the GB & Ireland team to face the USA in June's Curtis Cup. The team will be selected in April.

Jack Hume is the highest-ranked Irish male amateur at 23rd.

There are 378 Irish Ladies Golf Union affiliated golf clubs, with 38,000 women and 4,000 girls registered playing members in Ireland.
