Delahoussaye has Toronto advantage
Friday, 23 July 2010 17:37Brent Delahoussaye equalled the tournament record with a first-round 62 as he moved to the top of the leaderboard at the Canadian Open at St George's in Toronto.
Delahoussaye made an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey in his eight-under-par round as he ended the day two strokes clear of fellow Americans Vance Veazey and Brock Mackenzie, who were tied for second.
The 29-year-old Delahoussaye becomes the fifth man to shoot a 62 at the Canadian Open, while his round also broke the St George's Golf & Country Club's previous course record of 64 set by George Knudson 42 years ago.
Delahoussaye made a lightning start to his round, hitting an eagle on the ninth - his first hole - before securing a birdie on the 10th.
'I was three under after two and thinking, 'Wow! This could be good',' Delahoussaye said on www.pgatour.com.
'The key was probably hitting fairways. I figured the rough was going to be thick after my practice round.'
Another birdie followed on the 12th before the only blemish on his card came with a bogey on the next. A birdie at 17 steadied any nerves before further birdies at two, five, six and seven.
Behind Veazey and Mackenzie, nine players were tied for fourth place one shot further back, among them Hunter Mahan, Dean Wilson, Charley Hoffman, Rich Barcelo, Steve Wheatcroft and Spencer Levin.
