Rain halts first round at Puerto Rico

First-round play was suspended for the day because of heavy rain at the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open on Thursday.

Six inches of rain had saturated an already-waterlogged layout at Trump International Golf Club by 2pm local time and organisers decided to resume play at 7.15am local on Friday.

Only a handful of players had started the opening round, American Skip Kendall making the biggest splash when he holed out with a seven-iron from 159 yards to eagle the par-four 10th, his first hole.

However, Kendall was unable to see his ball drop into the cup in murky light caused by the thunderstorms and play was suspended soon after.

The $3.5 million Puerto Rico Open is being held in the same week as the elite WGC-CA Championship in Miami where the world's top 50 players are competing.

American Michael Bradley is the defending champion at Trump International, having won last year's title by a shot from compatriot Brett Quigley and Australian Jason Day.
