Casey withdraws from Boston event
Thursday, 3 September 2009 08:15Paul Casey's rib muscle tear is taking longer to heal than he hoped and he has now withdrawn from this week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston.
The world number three did not feel able to hit any more than a sand wedge during practice for the second leg of the FedEx Cup play-off series.
Casey suffered the injury getting ready for The Open in July, managed only a few holes of the Bridgestone world championship last month and then withdrew from both the US PGA and last week's Barclays tournament.
After a scan revealed a tear of an oblique and strain of an intercostal muscle, Casey had a cortisone injection, but concern about making the situation worse prompted his decision to take another week off.
Ryder Cup points are on offer in Boston as well as on the European Tour in Switzerland, so the 32-year-old is not able to make the start to the qualifying race he wanted.
