European Tour qualifying school round-up

Santiago Luna continued to roll back the years on home soil as he stayed out in front during the second round of the European Tour qualifying school stage two at Arcos Gardens in Spain.

The 45-year-old, a veteran of over 500 European Tour events and a winner of the circuit's Madeira Islands Open back in 1995, carded a three-under 69 for a nine-under aggregate of 135 and a two-stroke lead over Dennis Kupper of Germany and former Irish PGA number one Simon Thornton.

Thornton was in impressive form and his round of 70, coupled with his first round score of 67 leaves him well in contention.

Thorton's compatriots are not faring as well at the Acros course, with Mark Campbell the best of the rest of the Irish on one-under. Barrie Trainor is one shot further back with Mark Murphy back on seven-over.

Guy Woodman cemented his place at the head of the field at fog-delayed Montenmedio with a 68 for a 135 and a one-stroke advantage over Spain's Manuel Quiros.

Jonathan Lomas, the European Tour's rookie of the year back in 1994, moved into eighth on 141 after a 70. Irishman Peter O'Keffe is well placed alongside Lomas at three-under following his round of 70.

Richard Kilpatrick is also lurking with intent a shot further back on two-under while Jonathan Caldwell sits on one-over. The duo of Mark Staunton and Daniel Sugrue are both well out of contention, sitting on 10-over and 17-over respectively.

Jordi Garcia Pinto of Spain held on to top spot at Costa Ballena despite following up his dazzling first round 10-under 62 with a more modest 72 for a 134.

Gareth Shaw is best placed of the Irish at Costa Ballena after his round of 69 left him on five-under. John Kelly and Alan Murray both sit on two-under with Justin Keogh bringing up the rear on eight-over.

Frenchman Julien Guerrier, the former British Amateur champion, eased to the front at Sherry Golf Jerez with a 68 for a 10-under 134. Lloyd Saltman, the 2005 Open silver medal winner, sits five shots outside the current qualifying places on 147 after a 72.

Ireland's David Higgins is in joint 14th place on two-under, with Shane Lowry three shots further back. Colm Moriarty's round of 70 was a big improvement on yesterday's 76 but still leaves him 12 shots off the pace on two over, while Eddie Barr and Noel Fox would appear to be out of the running, as they sit of three-over and six-over respectively.
