Allenby wins Nissan Open in play-off

Australian Robert Allenby emerged from a six-man play-off to take the Nissan Open title in California yesterday. Allenby triumphed over Dennis Paulson, Toshi Izawa of Japan, Jeff Sluman, Bob Tway, and Brandel Chamblee with a six-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole after all six had finished the tournament on eight-under-par. Tway was the only other player of the six to reach the green on his approach shot during the play-off but he was over 40 feet from the hole and couldn't make the birdie putt necessary to take the play-off to a second hole.

Every one of Allenby's Tour titles so far have come via a play-off. Last year he won both the Houston Open and the Western Open with play-off victories over Craig Stadler and Nick Price respectively. World number one Tiger Woods continued his mediocre season by finishing three strokes behind Allenby and the other leaders at five under.
